Nifty Thrifty Eco CAL – Week 1

Hello everyone!! We are sooooo excited to begin our Nifty Thrifty Eco Bag CAL with GoKraftz Yarns!! We hope that all of you, who placed your orders for the yarn kit, have received them, worry not!! Due to back to back holidays there might have been some delay, give it a day or two it will definitely reach you!

So get your hooks and yarn and lets get started with WEEK 1 of Instructions for the Nifty Thrifty Eco Bag!!

Lets look at all the details once again before we begin.

MATERIALS

Yarn Options: Any DK or Heavy DK yarn OR any sport weight or heavy fingering weight yarn.

Yarn options: Gokraftz hibulky, Gokraftz bulky
Vardhman grandeur, Vardhman Farrago, Vardhman Millennium, Indian Batik yarn, Laura cotton

Yardage required
– approx. 270 mts of any colour of your choice ~ 100gms for Main colour.
– approx.  270 mts of any colour of your choice ~ 100gms for Contrast colour.             

Hook Size
– 5.0 mm normal crochet hook if you are using dk/heavy dk yarn.
– 3.5 mm normal crochet hook if you are using sport weight yarn.
or hook required to meet gauge.

Scissors or yarn snippers, stitch markers, Measuring tape, Yarn needle

SKILL LEVEL:

Beginner

SIZING MEASUREMENTS: 

As a rectangle, before finishing – 2ft x 3ft for both yarn options, after blocking.

GAUGE:

4” x 4” square – in double crochet with 5 mm hook.

SPECIAL STITCHES:

scdc2tog: single crochet double crochet 2 together

Insert hook into the next st (or ch sp), yo, pull up a loop, (2 loops on the hook), yo, insert hook into the next st, yo, pull up a loop, (4 loops on the hook) yo, pull through 2 loops, (3 loops on the hook) yo, pull through last 3 loops.

dcsc2tog: double crochet single crochet 2 together Yo, insert hook into the next st (or ch sp), yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook), yo, pull through 2 loops, (2 loops on the hook), insert hook into the next st, yo, pull up a loop, (3 loops on the hook) yo, pull through last 3 loops.

NOTES:

  • ch2/ch1 at the start of the Row, doesn’t count as a St.
  • This bag is a constructed as a rectangular flat piece first and then the corners are worked to form the shape of the bag.
  • Pattern is worked in flat rows by turning at the end of each row for the body, and in the round for the edging and shaping.
  • The instructions are written in crochet shorthand, for eg. “sc 2” means single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, “2sc” means make 2 single crochet in the same stitch.
  • Stitch count is mentioned in Brackets as [#] at end of row.
  • Blocking is a must for this project to achieve the desired look.

SCHEMATICS:

The bag is created by making a rectangle and then sinching the 4 corner points to create the shape. However instead or a normal rectangle we shall be starting from one corner and working our way u to create the remaining 3 corners of the rectangle.

The instructions remain the same for either yarn option you choose, unless specified.

With MC.

ROW 1 (WS): In MR, make 5 dc. Turn.[5]

ROW 2 (RS): ch1, 2sc in first st, sc till the 2nd last st, 2sc in the last st. Turn.[7]

ROW 3 (WS): ch2, 2dc in first st, *ch1, sk1, dc* Repeat * to * till the 2nd last st ending in ch1, sk1, 2dc in the last st. Turn.[9]

ROW 4 (RS): Repeat ROW 2. [11]

ROW 5 (WS): Repeat ROW 3. [13]

ROW 6 (RS): Repeat ROW 2. [15]

Change to CC, Cut MC.

ROW 7 (WS): ch1, 2sc, *ch3, sk1, sc. * Repeat * to * till the 2nd last st, ending with ch3, 2sc in the last st. Turn. [10 sc, 7 ch3 sp]

ROW 8 (RS): ch2, 2dc, dc, *sc in ch3 sp, dc in sc. * Repeat * to * till the 2nd last st, 2dc in the last st. Turn. [19]

ROW 9 (WS): Repeat ROW 7 [12 sc, 9 ch3 sp]

ROW 10 (RS): Repeat ROW 8. [23]

ROW 11 (WS): Repeat ROW 7. [14 sc, 11 ch3 sp]

ROW 12 (RS): Repeat ROW 8. [27]

Change to MC, Cut CC.

ROW 13 (WS) – ROW 18 (RS): Repeat ROW 3 and ROW 2 alternately, ending with ROW 2 repeat.

Change to CC, Cut MC.

ROW 19 (WS) – ROW 24 (RS): Repeat ROW 7 – ROW 12.

Change to MC, Cut CC.

ROW 25 (WS) – ROW 30 (RS): Repeat ROW 13 – ROW 18.

Change to CC, Cut MC.

ROW 31 (WS) – ROW 36 (RS): Repeat ROW 7 – ROW 12.

Change to MC, Cut CC.

ROW 37 (WS) – ROW 42 (RS): Repeat ROW 13 – ROW 18.

Change to CC, Cut MC.

ROW 43 (WS) – ROW 48 (RS): Repeat ROW 7 – ROW 12.

IF YOU ARE USING GO HI BULKY (DK/HEAVY DK WEIGHT YARN), STOP HERE.

IF YOU ARE USING GO BULKY (SPORT WEIGHT YARN), CONTINUE THE REMAINING ROWS BELOW.

ROW 49 (WS) – ROW 54 (RS): Repeat ROW 13 – ROW 18.

Change to CC, Cut MC.
